Rhapis palm care
This palm is an adaptable, slow-growing plant that is well-suited for indoor environments.
  • Light: The rhapis palm thrives in bright, indirect light but is tolerant of lower light conditions. Avoid harsh, direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
  • Water: Water when the top inch or two of soil feels dry to the touch. Keep the soil moist but not soggy, as overwatering can lead to root rot. Reduce the watering frequency in the winter when the plant’s growth slows.
  • Soil: A well-draining, nutrient-rich potting mix is essential for this palm. A mix designed for palms or an all-purpose potting mix with perlite or sand added for drainage works well.
  • Humidity: This plant prefers moderate to high humidity. If your home is dry, you can increase the humidity by misting the leaves regularly, using a humidifier, or placing the pot on a tray of pebbles with water.
  • Temperature: Keep the palm in a warm environment between 60–80°F (15–27°C). Protect it from cold drafts, which can cause damage.
  • Fertilizer: Feed your palm with a balanced, liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Do this monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) and stop in the fall and winter.
  • Pruning: Minimal pruning is required. Remove any brown or damaged fronds by cutting them at the base.
Common problems
  • Brown leaf tips: This is often a sign of low humidity, irregular watering, or a buildup of salts from fertilizer or tap water. Use filtered water, flush the soil periodically, and increase humidity.
  • Yellowing leaves: Can be a sign of overwatering or poor drainage. Adjust your watering schedule and check the soil’s drainage.
  • Pests: Watch for common houseplant pests like spider mites, scale, and mealybugs. Infestations can be treated with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
