General philodendron care

Light: Place in bright, indirect light, though most varieties are tolerant of medium to low light. Direct sun can burn the leaves.
Water: Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry to the touch. Both overwatering and underwatering can cause drooping leaves.
Humidity: While many varieties can tolerate average household humidity, they thrive in higher humidity, especially those with velvety leaves. Mist occasionally or use a humidifier.
Soil: Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix that is slightly acidic.
Fertilizer: Feed monthly during the spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. No fertilizer is needed during the fall and winter.

Toxicity and common issues

Toxicity: All philodendrons are toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. They contain calcium oxalate crystals that can cause oral irritation, swelling, and difficulty swallowing.
Yellowing leaves: A common sign of overwatering. Ensure the pot has proper drainage and allow the soil to dry out between waterings.
Brown leaf tips: Can be caused by low humidity, inconsistent watering, or a buildup of salts in the soil from tap water.
