Moss rose care
Moss roses are resilient and low-maintenance plants, making them ideal for beginner gardeners.
- Light: They thrive in full sun, needing at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight daily for the best blooms.
- Water: Water sparingly and allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. The succulent foliage stores water, making the plant very drought-tolerant.
- Soil: Use well-draining, sandy, or gravelly soil. Moss roses prefer poor soil and will produce more flowers with fewer nutrients. Avoid heavy, wet clay soils, which can cause root rot.
- Fertilizer: Fertilizing is generally not necessary. If you do fertilize, use a phosphorus-rich formula sparingly to promote blooms.
- Deadheading: Regular deadheading (removing spent blooms) can encourage more flowers.
Pet safety
Moss roses contain soluble calcium oxalates, making them toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if ingested. Ingestion can cause drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, and, in severe cases, tremors and kidney failure. If you have pets that might chew on plants, it is best to place moss roses in an area they cannot access.
