Hollyhock care
  • Sunlight: Hollyhocks need a location with full sun, receiving at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight per day.
  • Soil: They prefer moist but well-drained, rich soil. Adding organic matter like compost before planting will help them thrive.
  • Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry spells, but avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot. Water at the base of the plant to keep the foliage dry.
  • Staking: Because of their height, taller varieties may need staking to prevent them from toppling over in strong winds.
  • Deadheading: To encourage more blooms and prevent unwanted self-seeding, remove spent flower spikes. If you want the plant to reseed, leave some of the spent flowers on the stalk.
Common problems
  • Hollyhock Rust: This fungal disease is the most common and serious problem, causing orange or yellow spots on the leaves. To prevent it, ensure good air circulation, avoid overhead watering, and remove all infected foliage.
  • Pests: Young plants are susceptible to slugs, snails, and flea beetles. 
Toxicity and benefits
  • Toxicity: Hollyhocks are non-toxic to cats, dogs, and humans. However, the plant’s stems and leaves can cause mild skin irritation in some people with sensitive skin.
  • Wildlife: They are excellent for attracting pollinators such as bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies.
  • Edibility: The flowers and young leaves are edible and can be used in salads or as a garnish.
