Growing and caring for chrysanthemums is relatively easy, whether you keep them as potted annuals or perennials.
- Sunlight: Plant mums in full sun, where they will receive 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day. This maximises blooms and promotes hardiness.
- Soil:Â Use rich, well-draining soil to prevent root rot. If planting in containers, use a quality potting mix rather than garden soil.
- Watering:Â Mums have shallow root systems and need consistent moisture, especially in hot weather. Water deeply at the soil level rather than overhead to help prevent fungal diseases.
- Fertilizing:Â For perennial mums, feed with a balanced fertilizer (like 10-10-10) monthly from spring until buds begin to set. Stop fertilizing once the flower buds show color.
- Pinching:Â To create a bushier, sturdier plant, pinch back the branch tips. For early bloomers, stop pinching by mid-June, and for late bloomers, stop by mid-July.
- Overwintering:Â For hardy garden mums, leave the old growth over the winter and cover the base with mulch to insulate the roots. Cut back the dead stems in the spring when new growth appears.
- For potted florist mums:Â These are often not hardy and are best treated as annuals or brought indoors during winter to be replanted in spring.Â
