Anthuriums can thrive indoors if you can mimic their native tropical environment.
Light: They require bright, indirect light to grow and bloom. Too much direct sun can burn the leaves, while too little will result in fewer flowers and muted colors.
Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Overwatering can lead to root rot, but underwatering will cause the plant to wilt. Water when the top inch or two of soil feels dry.
Humidity: Being native to rainforests, Anthuriums need high humidity, ideally 60% or higher. To increase humidity, you can mist the leaves, use a humidifier, or place the pot on a tray filled with pebbles and water.
Temperature: They prefer warm conditions, with temperatures between 65–85°F (18–30°C). Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature drops.
Soil: A well-draining, airy potting mix that is rich in organic matter is essential. A mix for orchids or aroid plants is ideal, as it prevents waterlogging.
Fertilizer: During the growing season (spring and summer), feed with a high-phosphorus liquid fertilizer diluted to half or quarter strength every few months to encourage more blooms.
Toxicity and benefits
Toxicity: All Anthurium plants are toxic to cats, dogs, and humans if ingested. The leaves and stems contain calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation, swelling, and a burning sensation in the mouth.
Air purification: Anthuriums are effective at purifying the air, removing pollutants like ammonia, formaldehyde, toluene, and xylene from indoor environments.
