Alocasia

Price range: ₹350.00 through ₹500.00

Alocasia, also known as

Elephant Ear, is a stunning genus of tropical plants celebrated for its large, sculptural, and often dramatically patterned leaves. Native to tropical and subtropical Asia and Eastern Australia, Alocasias are popular houseplants that add an exotic, jungle-like feel to indoor spaces. They are rhizomatous or tuberous, with each new leaf growing larger than the last during the warmer months.

Care guide
  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light, mimicking its native habitat on the rainforest floor. Direct sun can easily burn its leaves and should be avoided.
  • Watering: Likes consistently moist but not soggy soil. Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry. Reduce watering significantly during the winter, as many Alocasias enter a dormant phase.
  • Humidity: Requires high humidity to thrive. Keep it in a humid room like a bathroom or kitchen, or use a humidifier or a pebble tray with water. Misting can help, but daily misting is needed for effectiveness.
  • Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 65–85°F (18–29°C). Keep it away from cold drafts or sudden temperature changes.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining, loose, and slightly acidic potting mix. An aroid mix with ingredients like coco coir, perlite, and orchid bark is ideal.
  • Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half-strength every 2–4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Do not fertilize during dormancy.
  • Pruning: Simply remove any yellowing, damaged, or dead leaves by cutting the stem at the base.
Common problems
  • Drooping leaves: Can be caused by underwatering, overwatering, or insufficient light.
  • Yellowing leaves: Often a sign of overwatering. Allow the soil to dry out more between waterings.
  • Brown leaf tips/edges: Usually caused by low humidity, inconsistent watering, or mineral buildup from tap water. Using distilled or filtered water may help.
  • Pests: Alocasias are susceptible to spider mites, which thrive in low humidity. Regular inspection and cleaning of leaves can prevent infestations.
Important note on toxicity
All parts of the Alocasia plant are toxic to humans and pets if ingested due to the presence of insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. It can cause mouth and stomach irritation. Keep this plant out of reach of children and pets
