Growth habit: As a trailing vine, pothos is often grown in hanging baskets or placed on shelves where its vines can hang. It can also be trained to climb a pole or trellis.
Mature plants: In their native tropical habitats, pothos can grow significantly larger, with leaves that develop deep lobes. Indoors, they typically stay much smaller.
Pothos care
Pothos is known for being low-maintenance and forgiving.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate low-light conditions. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves, while too little light may cause variegated varieties to lose their distinctive patterns.
Water: Water when the top inch or two of soil is dry. Yellowing leaves can indicate overwatering, while drooping leaves signal it needs a drink.
Soil: A standard, well-draining potting mix is ideal. Pothos tolerates a range of soil pH levels.
Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 65–85°F (18–30°C) and should be kept away from cold drafts.
Humidity: While tolerant of average household humidity, it thrives in more humid conditions.
Fertilizer: During the growing season (spring and summer), feed with a diluted liquid houseplant fertilizer once a month.
Toxicity and benefits
Toxicity: Pothos plants are toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, so they should be kept out of reach of pets. The leaves contain needle-shaped calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation.
Air purification: Pothos is effective at removing indoor air pollutants like formaldehyde, xylene, and benzene, according to the 1989 NASA Clean Air Study.
